Reinhold Heil - "THE ZODIAC"

"According To Janusphere"

The highly anticipated program According To Janusphere enhances Janusphere Dance Company's (JDC) already luminous place on the map of American dance. This latest of groundbreaking productions from JDC features four world premieres from choreographers Darion Smith, Danielle Genest, Derek Williams, and Nikki Hefko; a world premiere score from composer Reinhold Heil, four time recipient of ASCAP Film and Television and Music Awards; live performances by David LaMarche, Resident Conductor ABT, and Yuval Waldman, world-renowned violinist and conductor, of music by jazz giant Dick Hyman; and costumes designed by award winning designer A.Christina Giannini. The choreographers make innovative use of classical, modern and contemporary themes and styles, while Janusphere dancers are the epitome of energy and precision as they lead audiences into dramatically-choreographed dancescapes. As noted by Jennifer Dunning of the New York Times "these dancers stand out for their long, clean classical ballet line..." If to have danced is to have lived, Janusphere is bursting to its seams with life, for as Ellen O'Connel of the Santa Barbara Independent said, "...they are mighty in repertoire and spirit."

Ein kurzes Interview dazu mit Reinhold gibt es hier:

It’s a 16 minute piece about the Zodiac, featuring 12 dancers, each representing one of the signs. In the first movement the signa are introduced in a short blurb of about 16 seconds each. Then follow four movements for the four elements, Fire, Earth, Air and Water, danced by the three corresponding dancers. The finale brings all dancers and musical elements together in a furious climax and then the elements drift into space. It is my usual hybrid of orchestral and electronic music. But there is one part that is very unusual. It was done 100% using Metasynth, a graphics based sound design software. I think it is evidence that instruments like these can render really lively and exciting results and transcend the ingrained expectations of the average listener. I wouldn’t call this avant garde at all, but it is also not conventional by any means. I would have preferred to perform the music live with a 50-piece orchestra and live electronics, but that’s out of the question, given the lack of funding for such things over here. Let’s hope the National Endowment For The Arts will become aware of the company and we can do a live performance some time in the future!
Bon Voyage, Manne!

Gut zu hören, dass sich Reinhold auch andere künslerische Wege offenhält. (Also nicht allein bis zum Ende seiner Tage Filme scoren.) :D
